Tonight Somadrone, Twinkranes, Fuck Buttons, Legion Of Two

A farewell to one of the gems in our wee islands music scene crown is heading off to to San Fran, taken his space echoing oscillations with him. The vid below is a solo outing at this year DEAF, but tonight he will be join live with two other members of the long gone but still loved Connect Four Orchestra.

Somadrone - Secton Six.mp3 (Taken from “Lets Depart” 10″ E.P – 2001 )
Somadrone - Trail For A Trial.mp3 (Taken from "Fuzzing Away To A Whisper" LP - 2005)
Also on the bill is three piece Krautrock Revivalist Twinkranes and who have just released a great record on Twisted Nerve.

And if you can still rock on after that there is this afterwards.

After hearing new songs like "Flight Of The Feathered Serpent" and "Space Mountain" which sound like modern unoffensive tv idents music, for me Fuck Buttons have lost their edgy charm. The first album was more than just a homage exercise to Eno and Bryne's 81 masterpiece, it genuinely sounded dangerous, exciting and even new but now I wouldn't be surprise if "Olympians" (the most skippable track on "Tarot Sports") is used over rubbish tv sport montages. But it will be worth going to hear songs of their first album and the schizo disco epic that is "Surf Solar" of the new one and Legion Of Two in support also

Live Film Score Show At The Box Social, Sat. Dec. 12th Boys Of Summer, John Purcell etc

Live Film Score Show

Boys Of Summer featuring A.Fogarty (Toymonger / Weil Rats), I.Pawle (Sea Dog / Scented Candle) & PG Smyth (Jimmy Cake) unleash a unrelentless barrage of sweet disco analog drone swells. They return to the Box Social after one of the most intense show I've seen this year. I overheard one punter after that "Cannibal Holocaust" score show saying "It was like getting hit over the head by a cancerous penis", quality.

John Purcell is a Dublin-based musician who uses guitar, synthesiser, voice, field recordings, and effects to create dense layers of lush ambient sound.

Catscars is Robyn Bromfield, one fifth of Children Under Hoof and one of Patrick Kelleher's Cold Dead Hands. Behringer + Farfisa + Korg + Yamaha = Carpender Doom grooves.

Atlas Sound - Quick Canal

Laetitia Sadier is right at home on this new Atlas Sounds track from his latest LP; Logos. All in all this Spacey krautrock TUNE could sit neatly into Stereolab's 1999 underrated "Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night", without you knowing it was made 10 years later by an hyper productive young American. Bradford Cox has really outdone himself with this stellar track.

Jeffery Lewis & The Junkyard - If Life Exists?

Sick today, yesterday aswell, but you can't be well all the time.
I watched this video over a year ago, good to see the song appearing on his new album, which like all his albums is pretty darn great, still its the 12 Crass Covers that holds a special place in my heart.
For another good "Black Cab Sessions" vid, cast your eyes on Final Fantasy previewing a new song in this video.

Cold Cave's Debut LP

"The Trees Grew Emotions And Died" EP from last year was one joyous dark minimal affair but their first long player shines away from their cold wave Iron Curtain leanings towards a popper New Order esque sound. In doing so I think some of their charm as been lost. It's an enjoyable listen and still well worth getting but just not the epic dark one that I was hoping for, I need the dark stuff.

Pulsating, hynotic and still as a pinch of The Advantage (Main man Robby Moncrief's previous band) in it. Im still waiting on road records to get the vinyl I order in but Ive been tapping in to its sultery playfull ways, having it stuck on repeat since I downloaded it three weeks ago.

Tuesday 23 June 2009

I took it upon myself to go big at the last moment and do an all day festival in your humble home. The event will feature 8 acts who have already played sweet sets at different box social show over the course of the last 6 months, 4 others yet to thrill out bare concrete walls.
This is sure to be fun, maybe be too much fun.

Thread Pulls
No no wave, roto tom drumming, trumpet/Vocal looping two piece of excellent, Thread Pulls are still the only Irish band to play All Tomorrows Parties Festival. You can download a series of ep for free Here and a great hour long mix can be got here.

Children Under Hoof,
...are five people from various regions of Ireland, brought together in college by a mutual love of Risk, Father Ted and 7"s played at 33 RPM. Members include Limerick's Miss Junior Teen '99, the co-founder of the original Ted Fest, 1/2 of experimental band Ixchel, 1/1 of Patrick Kelleher, and IADT's Best Tash 2006. Their music, vl tone busting/sax swarming/vss sampling/floor tom pounding noise creates a sound that could be described as trying to channel the souls of Robert Rendal, Michael Karoli and Porter Wagoner but failing in a wigi board inferno.

"...Anxiety-ridden, dread-fueled creepers of scraping metal, white noise, and dripping feedback..." - The Adhocist

"Like watching late period Rick Wakeman being attacked by robots made out of old spring coils. And if you don't think that's a pretty appealing vision, well then, you're missing a few mental teeth." - The Wire
Haha too good, well we think he's the bomb.

"Prolific in his work and benevolent with the output offering plenty of electronic goodies for free, Hunter-Gatherer is moody, broody, uplifting, an aural rip curl" - One Shot, Bang Bang

Patrick Kelleher
""You Look Cold" left me hot under the collar, this debut album from 24 year-old, Irish Patrick Kelleher is awe-inspiring in it's genre-bashing brilliance and refreshing take on a myriad of musical references. Swinging from Vincent Gallo's most whispery nonchalance to thumping electro beats circa Talking Heads with David Byrne/ Ian Curtis shouty vocals ('He Has to Sleep Sometime') via an obvious interest early 90s hip-hop, perhaps A Tribe Called Quest most noticeably, no small feat for one man!" - Amelia's Magazine.
This will be a solo show so the beautiful "Cold Dead Hands" will be elsewhere, expect non LP loopy stuff like this maybe or a twenty minite cover of The late great Joe Doyle's "Sweat Little Rock n' Roller" (In your dreams only).

Patrick Kelleher - Last Of The Summer Wine from Gerard Duffy on Vimeo.

Crayonsmith (solo),
"Subtle snatches of melody, classic if sometimes unexpected harmonic twists, droning percussive synths and charming vocals so beautifully layered and produced" - CLUAS on his last LP "White Wonder"

Ewa Gigon creates eerie ethereal loops with plumbing tubes, curtain rains and found metal drums Her wonderful live film scoring show at the box social can be view Here.

Squarehead "a boy who likes melody and is a gameaddict " - Urban Dictionary definition of "Squarehead".

Laura Sheeran carves out a unsettling audio tale with a rich and disturbing lexicon, from singing saws to carne ukulele, looped vocals from voices that sound out like warnings of the industrial revolution.

Mattew Doyle,
With the spunk of Barman, Perkins and Lomax, dubliner Matthew Doyle was been slowly chipping out his own style of post palace blues over that last few years.

Patrick Kelleher's 'Another Pretty Face' Mixtape

To celebrate the launch of Patrick Kelleher's debut album "You Look Cold"on the 18th (This Thurday) in Academy 2, here is a a tip top compilation he made for a now debunked site but he has kind enough to throw it my way. Ill be Djing at the launch also playing some slowmo 7"s, so hopefully see a few heads at it busting a groove to some slowed down Kylie.

another pretty face
1. Robert Rental - Double Heart
robert rental

Some friends and I were staying in Tentstation in Berlin last Summer, and to our delight one evening, instead of table tennis and bingo, the campsite entertainment consisted of DJs and a live gig. Anyway, this is one of the songs played by the DJ that night, who happened also to be the receptionist. After asking who it was, we tried to memorise his name, however we had forgotten an hour later. By chance, a kind user recommended this track to me and I have been listening solidly ever since. A post-punk DIY industrial electronic artist from Port Glasgow in Scotland, Robert Rental released two singles and two collaborative albums, one with Thomas Leer and the other with The Normal. Double Heart was released on Mute Records in 1980.
2. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Strange Fires
This is from the LA-based artist's superb 2004 album 'The Doldrums'
I will have the pleasure of supporting him and his live band when he plays Dublin on May 15th.
3. IXCHEL - Clockwork Castles
I have tried to put a lot of relatively unknown Irish acts into this mix and this is the first, IXCHEL, named after the aged jaguar goddess of midwifery and medicine in the ancient Maya culture. Comprising of Dublin Natives Timothy Hurley and Barry Semple.
4. Banjo or Freakout - Upside Down
Londoner Alessio Natalizia allows himself only one take for every track that he records. You can download his 'Upside Down' EP and other releases for free from his blog.
5. Angkorwat - Daughter of
Not to be confused with '80s Thrash metal outfit Angkor Wat, Dublin Artist Niamh is a classical violinist who went back to square one, typing out basic melodies on macbook keys. it’s reflection of several obsessions including synesthesia, Romaine Brooks, hidden history, Mozart and Cambodian temples.
6. Lucky Dragons - Mercy
I have been lucky enough to see the LA outfit twice in Dublin this year. In live shows, the audience becomes part of the music making process, as Luke passes around drums, gongs, live electrical wires, rocks and other instruments, creating a buzzing, clicking, humming symphony.
'Mercy' is from their 2002 LP 'Dark Falcon'.
7. A Faulty Chromosome - Jackie O
I fell in love with this band from Austin, Texas ever since my friend (cough, cough) introduced me to them last year. They seem to have the same effect on most people who hear their songs. You can purchase their Album 'as an ex-anorexic's six sicks exit' by mail. I did, and was very pleased when they sent out a copy of the album, along with a hand-made poster and a hand-written personal letter.
8. The Booklovers - She Said
Now based in London, Irishman Ferrau Lynch and friends love cassette tapes, glockenspiel, Jens Lekman and all things twee. It will be interesting to see how their sound develops with the all new line up.
9. Electrelane - On Parade
Fortunately, I saw them play once before they split up in 2007. Now I mourn the loss of the Brighton four-piece who are signed to the same label as Stereolab, 'Too Pure'.
'On Parade' Comes from their 2004 album, 'The Power Out'.
10. The Modern Lovers - Modern World
He was dancing in the lesbian bar, aoo, aoo aoo.
11. E+S=B - 3 Sides Part 1
Dublin 3-piece 'Electronic Sensoria Band' bring Krautrock, Jazz and Electronic sounds to the Irish underground scene. David, Anto and Fergus have released an LP with Can's Damo Suzuki.
This track is from 'Inhale the Sound'.
12. Cian Nugent - The Phantom Bus of Clarinda Park
Cian Nugent is an 18 year old exploratory guitarist from Dublin Ireland whose playing is rooted in pre-war blues, Appalachian string bands and the Takoma tradition.
Fahey is referenced quite a bit on this recording, but Cian is no mere Fahey imitator. He uses the style as a starting point for his compositions and creates something highly personal within these limitations.
13. Jeffrey Lewis - The East River
From 'The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane and Other Favourites'.
14. David Kitt - Whispers Return the Sun, Rest the Moon
david kitt
Has been at the forefront of the Irish 'indie' music scene for about 10 years. His new album, 'The Nightsaver' sounds great, however I have been too poor to buy a copy recently so here is my favourite song from his successful 2001 album, 'The Big Romance'.
15. Si Schroeder - C4
Possibly the best music in Ireland at the moment. This is from 2006's 'Coping Mechanisms'
16. Hulk - The Moon Versus the Sea
From his 2005 album 'Silver Thread of Ghosts', available on Osaka Recordings.
17. Jackson C. Frank - October
1960's folk from the now deceased Frank's album 'Blues Run the Game'.
18. Devendra Banhart - Nice People...
From his second album, fully entitled 'Oh Me Oh My...The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit'.
19. John Jacob Niles - Little Black Star
john jacob niles
I discovered the wonders of Appalacian dulcimer-playing John Jacob while watching Scorsese's Bob Dylan documentary 'No Direction Home'. He recorded primarily in the 1920s and '30s.
20. The Ink Spots - Do I Worry?

I remember this song from my parents playing the soundtrack to Dennis Potter's TV series 'The Singing Detective' on vinyl when I was little. I loved it. Frank Sinatra does a fine version of it too.
21. Mt. Eerie - Human
A band from Anacortes, Washington, fronted by Phil Elverum formerly of The Microphones. If you don't have any of their music, get some. This track is from 2005's 'Twenty Bees' EP, which they gave away for free.
You can buy many of their releases here:
