Things I Fell In Love With This Year: A Faulty Chromosome - As an Ex-Anorexic's Six Sicks Exit

A Faulty Chromosome have created such a likable lofi pop noise record that they ask for "donations" to get their cd from their myspace. Sincerity is lost with most bands with "pay what you want" gimmicks, but you know that they post all albums themselves and in the package I got at the start of the summer including free badges and a one of a kind photocopied poster with hand scibbled crayon all over them, smell memory kicks in when I open the package and the waxy smell fills the room. They have a pretty acurate discribtion for themself, " a faulty chromosome is a fuzzy mess of tremolo, hand-claps, 8-bit blips, water-damaged Mister Rogers records, mashed Casio chords and drum machine’d beats."

Jackie O from mike ambs on Vimeo.

Download "As an Ex-Anorexic's Six Sicks Exit" Lp from their Last FM.
Once you fall in love with the best pop noise album of the year and indeed one of my favourite album of this year, you can buy it from them for a suggected donations of $6.66 including postage here, but deffo give them as much as you can expecally if your living outside of America just to cover postage costs. Indeed a wonderful album from start to finish that has been ignored by alot of people not doubt since its a self release and not because of its quality.

Things I Fell In Love With This Year: Chrisma - Japanese Restaurant LP

As the first part of this series of posts suggests, I'm not to bothered about "albums of 2008" but more of albums and indeed bands that I have discovered in the last 12 months. Like Iron Curtain in the first post, they were releasing their super sounds from 82' till 88' and they only got the re-release treatment last year, but I only got my mits on them in september or so. Well in the same vien, here is another oldie but a newie fo me. I snatched Chrisma's "Japanese Restaurant LP" early this year, January or Feburary and is probably my favourite album I hear in 2008. The Italian duo where produced by no other than Vangelis (Blade Runner OST) and he as made Chrisma sound super fresh with famous folk like LCD Soundsystem and Eagles of Death Metal definitely "borrowing" grooves and ideas from different tracks from their 1977' opus " ("Thank You" and "Wonderlust" respectively).
Here is a couple of tracks from their wonderful record, the whole album is so good, from sleazey rock n rock to sinister love affair laments with equal parts spanish guitar and analogue oscilations that 'Berlin' Bowie would be proud of. Also a meddle of tv clips of chrisma singles spanning from 76' to 80' too for your viewing pleasure.

Things I Fell In Love With This Year: Iron Curtain

Wonderful U.S. minimal electro from 82 till 88'. For all those how didnt take notes, I put the stalking soundtrack masterpiece "Terror Story" on the "Hollowing Mixtape", which is only a taster from their dark cannon. The band only release a couple of super sweet eps which now have been collected together in one tastey collection by Pylon Records. Here is a couple of tracks that are still more cutting than any pop tracks of the nowaday.

ARP, Lichens, White Rainbow - Migration

A live sound track piece by two of my favourite hynotic kings ARP and White Rainbow, not sure who Lichens is, but he is in good company anyways. Here's the story behind the piece.
On October 2, 2008 at 303 Gallery in Chelsea, Doug Aitken invited Arp, Lichens, and White Rainbow to perform live musical improvisations to his film installation "MIGRATION", replacing the film’s original soundtrack. The 24-minute film was played successively three times. Here, Lichens is highlighted from 0:00 to 4:22, ARP from 4:23 to 7:00, White Rainbow from there to the end.

A Grave With No Name

Fuzzing up my pop timbers, here is some wonderful tunes for uk pop noise band/one dude, A Grave With No Name.
"And We Parted Ways At Mt Jade" is beautiful hazy Galaxie 500-eque groove that makes me feel the same way when I listen to Liars - Pure Unevil. Like a kid just getting out of school for summer holidays, freewheelin' all the way to beach. While "Open Water" sounds like running/ falling down sand dunes in slow motion.

Also go here for a Virtual 7" of theirs, and in case you missed the series of Virtual 7" I put together with so far all Irish artists go here.

Turnpike Twilight Mixtape

A collection of arpeggiating night drive grooves.
01 Mort Garson And The Blobs - Son of Blob
The first song I ever heard on The Freak Zone on a very early wednesday morn tripping with Paul. A wonderful introduction to the only radioshow I listen to every week.
02 George Watts - Electric Man
More weirdo classic electro, this one from 81'. Thanks to No.1 in Belgium for this.
03 Thieves Like Us - Fass

B-side to "Drugs In My Body".
04 Truffle Club - Gone Blue
The Arpeggiating sweetness continues this time from this year and from a scot. The eathreal vocals flow over the bouncing keys locking you into its hypnotic waves.
05 Greg Vandike - Clone
Synth-pop gem from 79' with pretty much the same pulsating synth that 'Gone Blue' has. Miles better than any thing Numan ever did.
06 Andrew Weatherall - Feathers

One of the "Two Lone Swordsman" rocks it out on his first release under his own name.
07 Joachim Witt - Ich Bin Der Deutsche Neger
Witt plays it funky on this one, taken from his second album "Edelweiss" from 82'. He's the best thing to come out of the german new wave scene that i've heard anyways. Rad album, righteous track.
09 Tom Tom Club - Lorelei
My favourite Tom Tom Club song, this is trance music.
10 Jah Division - Heart And Soul (Dub)
The groove gets dubbed up now with kid millions side project Jah Division. The best dub joy divsion band ever.
11 Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen (No Age Remix)

The mood gets even murkier with this wonderfull remix from No Age. Maybe I should check them out.
12 The B-52's - Dirty Back Road

13 David Holmes - I Heard Wonders
Holmes is krautrocking it out with this one, the first track of his latest album.
14 M83 - Kim & Jessie
Yeah, yeah is sounds alot like that Nick Kershaw song but 80s pop has its charms.
15 Laura Branigan - Self Control

Wonderful night time cycling tune and the video is sweet and dark to.
16 Decadance - On And On (Dub)
One of my favouite songs ever and a big thanks to 20 j.f.g. for the heads up.
17 Sissy - Queen Of Discoteque 1984
More Italian disco wonderfulness, thanks to blow up doll for this one.
18 Cody ChesnuTT - With Me in Mind (feat. Sonja Marie)
If the bloods not up yet, it will be after this sexed up ditty.

Heres a 11 track compilation given away with the new Analogue Magazine. "Underground" maybe not since the majority of side a is bright bubbly pop. It does contain some wonderful new Irish music and this cd/vinyl is shining a light on a lot of bands/Artist that are unknown even in their hometowns, so maybe it is underground. Side A
The High Life - Ugly Megan
Ballet Shoes - Grand Pocket Orchestra
Capogg - Supernova Scotia

Photos taken in Rosin Dubh through toy kaleidoscope.

I ended up getting a 4 hour bus to galway to see Ponytail in the hope that people still dance there and since every gig I've been to in Andrews Lane Theatre have been lame ducks. Alas the skinny jeans have spread west, restricting all movement in the roddy-faced crowd. Ponytail were as expected, skittle high great.

Thieves Like Us - Desire

Like all their vids, this one for Desire is a cut up of an 80's classic film. In this case it's Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva.
The song which I can't get out of my wee head, is from their new album which is out Nov 07/08 and by all a counts, should be rightous. But in the mean time here's a hearthy song from their last EP and a sweet 7 minuter for good measure .

Thieves Like Us - Your Heart Feels.mp3.
Thieves Like Us - An Easy Tonight.mp3
Also there is a link to another Thieves Like Us Video , the song named after and vid clip is of another Jean-Jacques Beineix film, this time Moon In The Gutter.
