One of my favourite films and my favourite soundtrack. Got me into Krautrock, Electronica and Ween, and unlike most soundtracks where the songs are tacked on, the soundtrack here is made up of songs from 'Music For You' mixtape given to Morvern for christmas by her dead boyfriend (who just killed himself on Christmas Eve). We hear the songs as she listens to them on her walkman. Turning her working days at a supermaket in to a magical carpet ride, hypnotic, memorising and one of the best films ever made. What more can i say, oh the novel by Alan Warner is quality and is dedicated to Holger Czukay (Can Bassist and producer maestro)

Consisting mostly of director Terry Zwigoff's (Who also did the dark humoured 'Bad Santa' and my favourite documentary 'Crumb'. When I 1st rent it out, the guy in the shop said what it was good fun flick, what he didn't say; you will be depressed for a week afterwards.) own 78 record collection, a mix of '20s, '30s big band, ragtime and amazing blues tracks. To be honest normally after 5 songs of most blues records i turn it off, but not this album. The slices from Skip James, Robert Wilkins and Craig Ventresco are classics. If thats not enough, Soundtrack and film opener 'Jaan Pehechaan Ho' from a Bollywood rarity sounds like a song from one of those dim a dozen Elvis Surf movies from the '60s but in the Bollywood Tradition. Here is 'Jaan Pehechaan Ho' in it's original form. Great great stuff.

This was the first Neil Young album i bought/hear. Another one of my favourite films with a haunting score by the 'Godfather of Grunge' intercut by Depp reading William Blake (with whom Depp's character shares the name) and a scene with Billy Bob Thornton, Jared Harris and Iggy Pop playing redneck cannibals with the latter in drag.

Quality song of their quality debut. 02 Sleep The Clock Around - Belle And Sebastian My favourite Belle and Sebastian song. 03 Variation One (edit) - Stereolab A Friend of mine doesn't like Stereolab, but he also said he does like punk until he seen Gang of Four live. Maybe he needs to see these folk live to. 04 Ceremony - New Order I last Joy Division song. 05 Birthday - The Sugarcubes Just got the 7" yesterday of ebay. The b-side is an Icelandic, but this is the English version,. Hope the rumors of Bjork playing Electric Picnic are true. 06 19th Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones The outro alone is a enough to have this song on this compilation. Such a weird sound. It goes while with the equally weird and addictive organ on the next track. 07 Grip89 - The Stranglers I was in Tesco one day, when i lived in London. In a bin there was the 'Best of the Shadows' and the 'Ultimate Punk album'. The 1st was 5er and the lather 3.45, which i went with. It had amazing songs i never hear before like 'Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner', Ian Dury And The Blockheads - Sex & Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll, The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (which is also on this mixtape) and this gem. Oh I could listen to that keyboard all day. Great great stuff.
08 Y Control - Yeah Yeah Yeahs I made this mix over a year ago, but I'm still not sick of it and 5 of the 12 bands that are still going i seen at Electric Picnic last summer. Luck me. 09 Shot In The Arm - Wilco Seen these boys the last time they played Ireland at Witnness (or had it changed to Oxygen at that stage). Never heard anything that i knew was them and by Joe they play heavier than any of the record and full of improvised distortion freak-outs.Nice. 10 The Real Sugar - dEUS Broke my foot 3 songs into these boys the 2nd time i saw them. The next time i saw them, they were the 1st band at Electric Picnic last year. What a way to kick start a festival. 11 La Ritourette - Sebastien Tellier I picked up a sticker of the cover of this single in a record shop. On it there was a quote from Pure Groove Magazine which read "This Song will make your whole body weep and fall in love with everything again and again and again". Bought the Album when it came out. Oh the video is the single version which has the 4 minutes intro cut out, silly silly chaps.
12 Message From A Black Man - The Heptones This and "I'll Be Around" are both from Studio One : Soul. A great compilation from a great label. 13 Hammer - Bob Marley I think I'm a Sucker for strange noise in pop records, this contains that sounds like a cat in heat (but in a good way) backing track. 14 I'll Be Around - Otis Gayle I heard another song with the same music but a completely different vocals layed on top. But this vocal rocks "there's always a chance,then amber sparkles remain, and sparks can turn into flames". 15 Heard It Through The Grapevine - The Slits Dirty reggae cover of the Marvin song, Ari-Up sings 'heard it thought the bassline' as the backing singers hum low low bass track. 16 Helter Skelter (alt. version) - The Beatles This dirty blues version is taken from Anthology3, an out take from the 'White Album' session.And according to Family member Paul Watkins, "Before Helter Skelter came along, all Charlie cared about was orgies." 17 Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson Heard this on the sound track of Lars Von Triers's classic film 'Breaking the Waves'. Didn't think Rod Stewart could be so good. 18 Runaway - Del Shannon A classic track and in my top3 pop songs with Nipple Erectors 'Gabriel' (See Pascal's Country Sounds Mixtape) and Abba's S.O.S 19 Neon Lights (Edit) - Kraftwerk 'Man Machine' was the first album i heard of Kraftwerk and for me still the best. This is one of 6 reasons why. Enjoy

Tommy Spurlin And The Southern Boys - Hang Loose "...Well my favourite pass-time Is to get myself a nickel or a dime Slip it in the jukebox-machine Grab me a kitten in tight blue jeans" Indeed! 07. Roy Montrell - (Everytime I Hear That) Mellow Saxophone You can't but dance to this track. "...Rip it, bop it, Davey Crockett". 08. Ween - Powder Blue I love it when Dean Ween introduces the band and they each in turn break into their solos, pure country! 09. The Handsome Family - The Sad Milkman I always envisage the video of this gem by Husband and Wife duo to be of a vampire milkman, seducing and killing the woman folk as he delivers his rounds in wee hours of the morning. 10. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I Am A Cinematographer Great countriafication of Palace song. 11. The Rolling Stones - Country Honk The two-stepping alter ego of "Honky-Tonk Women". 12. The Beatles - Don't Pass Me By Ringo's first song he wrote and he sang lead. It became a number one hit in Sweden too. Quality with a capital Q. 13. Pavement - Father To A Sister Of Thought Steven Malmus was sure that this was a surefire hit single, but it did no business. "I was smoking alot of grass when i picked the singles..."
14. Beck - Rowboat Another classic from Stereopathetic Soul Manure (A Collection of recordings from 1988 to '93). Only found out recently that Johnny Cash did a cover of it. Gees that man got around didn't he. 15. The Carter Family - I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes "Twould been better for us both had we never In this wide and wicked world had never met, But the pleasure we both seemed to gather I'm sure, love, I'll never forget". 16. The Slades - You Cheated Normal doo wop songs are upbeat but this slice from 58' has lyrics which are full of heartbreak. 17. Captain Beefheart - I'm Glad From his 1st and his greatest album Safe As Milk 1967. More doo wop, but more hopefully than the Slades song. 18. The Teen Queens - Eddie My Love Another classic track from 56. The Teen Queen were 14 and 16 at the time of recorded this very maturely song. Both died tragically of drug related deaths. 19. The Damned - Love Song Solid stuff for the Damned. 20. The Nipple Erectors - Gabrielle One of the Greatest pop song ever recorded from pre-Pogues singer Shane MacGowan. 21. Richard Hawley - Wading Through The Waters Of My Time The most country song he has done. Quite depressing though. 22. Woody Gruthrie - Vigilante Man I wonder if Walker Texas Ranger was write around this song. 23. Robert Wilkins - Thats No Way To Get Along Found this track on the "Ghost World Soundtrack". Well worth checking out. 24. Rev. A. W. Nix - Black Diamond Express Train To Hell Taken from "Goodbye Babylon", a 6 CD gospel collection. 5 CDs contain 135 songs from 1902-1960 and the 6th disc is comprised of 25 sermons recorded between 1926-1941 which is were this track was taken from. Always best to end a compilation with fire and brimstone i thought.
